Amongst lowland regions of Poland, Northern Malopolska (Little Poland) has special significance as the area of particularly rich folk music that until now has preserved traditions of the 19th century.
The recordings in this collection represent the present day music making of the Upland Gypsies, the Bargitka Roma (Romowie). The recordings were made in 2000, in Spisz in Czarna Gora and in Krakow, Nowa Huta, in city inhabitated by numerous Bergitka Roma population.
The earliest recordings on this CD come from the 1st Folk Music Festival in Warsaw in 1949 and extend through the 1980's. The selections feature the most distinguished instrumentalists and singers from the region.
This CD presents the fruit of many years of work on the documentation of traditional music from Kujawy, undertaken by specialists from the Polish Radio. It is presumably one of the most important volumes in our series of "Sources of Polish Folk Music", because the musical characteristics of the Kujawy region offer the deepest insight into the essential qualities of Polish music. To a foreigner, they are an epitome of Polish-ness.

When I look back and think about the ideas we were dealing with a year ago, and when I listen to the recording held in that club, I’m confronted with the failures that are there; which is probably why I’d rather be doing something else than writing these liner notes right now. But I’m also excited by what I hear, that the start of the music by the new quintet was so strong. From night to night it continues to be, which is why after ten years this ensemble is still looking for it’s next gig- so that it can keep finding something different to say and hopefully pay some of the rent along the way.
