About:
Mr. Lupa is a revered figure in Poland, and his work has been celebrated throughout Europe. He is one of Poland’s most prominent directors and has arguably had more direct influence on younger directors like Warlikowski and Jarzyna than more illustrious names like Grotowski or Kantor. He is well known for his adaptations of Austrian literature in particular. This is all-bran European theater, requiring much chewing and devoid of artificial sweetening. There is little in the way of narrative or dramatic shape. Long stretches of talk about events of pitiful meaninglessness are followed by longer stretches of talk about life’s meaninglessness itself. Mr. Lupa’s trademark is his minimalist dramaturgy, which has been called hypnotic and entrancing by his admirers.
