About:
Although jazz music of the 70ties has strayed quite a long way from its origin, the music of New Orleans, the latter is still being cultivated by an impressive number of traditional bands. Indeed, in spite of the expansive jazz-rock and many fashionable trends during these last years, the New Orleans Revival is coming into its own, especially in its now second home - Europe.
Traditional jazz, the earliest jazz music of the world, has been owing its freshness and vitality to amateurs. In the amateur music making in the 20ties emerged the ideal of its tone, and it is the amateurs that keep it now so much alive.
The Vistula River Brass Band is the example of it in the Polish Dixieland. Among its 9 members there are two car technicians, a graduate in hydrobiology, a technician mechanic, a teacher and a sociologist. All these crafts and professions have been united by idea of playing early jazz.
Their nine-year long activity has reached its highest point with the winning by them of two Golden Washboards at the Old Jazz Meetings in 1976 and 77 - after they had failed four times to win any prize at that competition (1969, 70, 71, 73) and been awarded two distinctions (1974, 75).
From their very beginning in November 1968, the VRBB has dedicated itself to the New Orleans and Chicago music whole exposing, which is obvious, the massive tone of brass instruments and march rhythms. In an unconventional (i. e. non-commercial) manner the Band creates (and not simply - recreates), the joyous, spontaneous climate of the 20ties. Indeed the VRBB frilly deserves the honor of being the band to initiate with their record the second fifty in the series Polish Jazz.
Ryszard Wolanski (original line notes from the album's back cover, translated by L. Wiewiorkowski).
